Walleye Fishing on the Floyd Lakes
Since the discovery of zebra mussels in our lakes several years ago, many people have asked about the effects of the infestation on our fishery and more specifically walleyes. The answer is both confusing and undetermined because of varying environmental factors in each lake.
There is little doubt that Mille Lacs Lake walleyes have been negatively impacted by zebra mussels. This is probably the result of increased water clarity which limits a walleye’s feeding zone. Walleyes prefer slightly cloudy water conditions which favors their hunting style. There is also some evidence that walleyes grow more slowly in zebra mussel infected waters, which increases predation pressure on the younger smaller walleyes.
However, while some lakes are adversely effected by zebra mussels other infested lakes show no ill effects. It is really too early to know how our lakes will be affected. The Pelican River Watershed is conducting a long term study of zooplankton populations on Big Floyd Lake. Zooplankton are a major part of our food chain for young fish. It is yet to be seen how the competition for plankton will affect our walleyes. Studies have shown that one year old walleyes are 14% smaller with zebra mussels in the lake. This leaves them vulnerable to predation longer.
It will be interesting to watch and study the Floyd Lakes in the future to see the effects of zebra mussels on our fishery.
